The latest Census data shows that Texas remains the top state for net domestic migration as the state’s population continues to grow.


Last year, nearly 612,000 people moved to Texas, while about 478,000 left.


The Census Bureau Data on state-to-state migration flows for 2023 shows that California, New York and Florida were the top states sending people to Texas.


“From our research and other past data, we’ve seen that people who move to Texas tend to be people in a younger workforce, who tend to be more likely to have children, and who came for better pay and more opportunity, employment,” Helen You of the Texas Demographic Center told KERA.

An analysis by the Census Bureau’s Demographic Center Data on state-to-state migration flows for 2023 shows that California, New York and Florida were the top states sending people to Texas.


Other major “sender states” were Louisiana, Illinois, Washington, and Oregon. You said this was calculated by subtracting the number of Texans who moved to other states from the number of people from those states who moved to Texas.


She noted that domestic migration actually increased between 2020 and 2021.


“During the pandemic year, the volume of migration across the country was low, but as we come out of the pandemic, we have seen that migration flows have been much higher than before and even higher than some of the previous years. -pandemic years,” you said.


Meanwhile, Texans leaving the state moved mainly to Colorado, Georgia and North Carolina. You said that the state of “outflow” changes year by year. This year, Indiana was among the top states that Texans are moving to.


“Indiana was not on the map in the last two rounds of data, so sometimes this could reflect a higher standard error and a small sample size from one year to the next,” You said.


You added that Texas has a consistent annual growth rate of 1.6%.
